The observed behavior when saving a file, it wants to use *.ods To change the default file types use the following instructions.
Word
Go to File | Options (located at the bottom left) | Save then under Save files in this format. Change to Word Document (*.docx)
Excel
Go to File | Options (located at the bottom left) | Save then under Save files in this format. Change to Excel Workbook (*.xlsx)
